Book Stumper

Answer to the Memory Lane Book Stumper from the November 19, 2008 Magic Bookshelf Digest:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss

It's my favorite author -- and maybe yours too -- in one of the most enduring holiday classics... Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas! This book has an original copyright date of 1957, and the classic cartoon shown on TV every year is not much newer. Rather like Charles Schultz and his Peanuts gang, however, the stories and messages Seuss spun remain fresh over the decades, never losing their relevance. To order a fresh new copy, you can click on the link above or visit the Best Christmas Stories Ever Store  for some other terrific titles to keep it company!

Answer to the Memory Lane Book Stumper from the November 7, 2008 Magic Bookshelf Digest:

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

Oh, it's Goodnight Moon! Margaret Wise Brown's children's books are timeless -- mostly written in the 1940s, they retain retro charm instead of becoming dated. A fascinating read about this important author is Leonard S., Marcus' excellent biography Awakened By the Moon, a featured pick this month in the Magic Bookshelf Online store.

Answer to the Memory Lane Book Stumper from the October 23, 2008 Magic Bookshelf Digest:

Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans

Those are some of the most beloved picture book lines ever. Bemelmans, fortunately, created a whole series of books starring Madeline, including Madeline's Rescue.

Answer to the Memory Lane Book Stumper from the October 9, 2008 Magic Bookshelf Digest:

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Now here are some famous first lines! In our hint excerpt, we heard from three of the four March sisters, the stars of the imminently readable classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Jo, Meg, Amy... and of course sweet, gentle Beth, who gets the next lines in the book. Alcott wrote many books, a couple of Little Women spin-offs (Little Men and Jo's Boys (Bantam Classics)), as well as separate novels like An Old-Fashioned Girl (Evergreen Classics) and Eight Cousins (Puffin Classics) -- any of which can keep an enthralled child (usually a girl) OR adult up reading half the night. This, well over 100 years after initial publication, is quite a feat.

Answer to the Memory Lane Book Stumper from the Sept. 25, 2008 Magic Bookshelf Digest:

No Flying in the House by Betty Brock

Published in 1970, this beloved title originally released by Scholastic stars a little girl named Annabel Tippens, whose guardian happens to be a tiny talking dog named Gloria. This would seem strange enough, but Annabel comes to learn from a cat named Belinda that she's unusual herself. She's not only a little girl, but half fairy as well!

You can learn more about and purchase this book by clicking the Amazon icon above, or finding No Flying in the House in the fantasy novel section of the Magic Bookshelf store !
